Supply : Care & Cleaning
Long Reins
The reins are made of lightweight yet durable MFP braid. Do not leave these reins in the sun for extended periods. Store them in a tack room or other place protected from sun and dirt. Hang them or lay them flat, either way.

To clean sand and dirt off of them, you can use a stiff brush or, if desired, wash them in a bucket of lukewarm water. A small amount of mild detergent can be used. Agitate, rinse a couple of times and hang to dry. Remove the leather buckles prior to immersing the reins, and care for them as you would any other leather tack.

Training Whip
The training whip is constructed by hand from a graphite rod. Graphite is very light, but brittle, and if left on the ground where it can be accidentally stepped on, or propped in a corner from which it can be knocked down, it can be broken.

Always store your whip in a whip rack or in a container such as a piece of pvc tube secured to the wall. Additionally, while working your horse, keep a traffic cone or other similar container close at hand in which to set your whip should you need to free both hands for tack adjustment or for any other reason.

Surcingle and Pad
The surcingle is a high-quality piece of training equipment that has been thoughtfully designed by Clay Maier and is exactly what he uses for training his horses everyday. Clean the leather with glycerine saddle soap and keep it moist and supple with your favorite dressing. With regular cleaning and oiling, it will last for years.

The pad that comes with the surcingle can be removed for cleaning via the four velcro straps. The pad can be machine washed in cold water or hand-washed by scrubbing with a firm brush and mild detergent. If you re-mate the velcro straps before washing it, you'll have less hair to clear from them after washing. You may roll the pad in a towel to squeeze out excess water first, then hang the pad to dry.
I put time and care into each product I craft, and it is important to me that you are satisfied with your purchase. If you have comments about the long reins or whips, please contact Meredith Commons Russo by email: meredith@claymaier.com or phone: 401-529-3735.
